Rick Kirkman

Baby Rick I was born a poor cartoonist in a log cabin drawn in poor perspective....

My cartooning career actually started in its amateur stage about the time I was in kindergarten. My professional career began as I was in junior high. I drew a parody of Mad Magazine and, having only one copy, charged my friends to read it--until all the other parents found out.

My professional career was on its way winding through a studio drawing for the Yellow Pages directories, an ad agency, and freelance design and illustration. Along the way I got sucked into the world of freelance gag cartooning for magazines, selling often enough to major magazines to keep me hooked. I met Jerry Scott during the gag cartoon phase twenty years ago and we became friends and eventually partners. After a brief and somewhat unsuccessful foray into syndication with Jerry, I returned to gag cartooning and advertising. I became a freelance humorous illustrator in 1982 and continue that today.

In 1987 Jerry and I were on the road to syndication again after the birth of my wife's and my second child. The conceptual work on our new strip was a cathartic experience for me, a new dad. "Baby Blues" was born and was released to 55 newspapers by Creators Syndicate on Jan. 7, 1990. "Baby Blues" is now syndicated daily by King Features Syndicate in more than 850 newspapers in 28 countries...and growing.
